Leeds Team Aiming High for Flugtag Glory

Leeds Team Aiming High for Flugtag Glory

Fans of fearless innovation, creativity and downright craziness take note – Red Bull’s Flugtag is coming to Roundhay Park on Sunday 17 July and will include a team of Leeds’ very own amateur aviators.

Team ‘Where Weasels Dare’ will be attempting to launch their hand-crafted 8 metre flying weasel into the Yorkshire skies, despite admitting to having never constructed anything more complex than a Kinder Egg toy.

Red Bull Flugtag challenges the brave and brainy to design, build and pilot home-made, human powered flying machines off a 30-foot high ramp in hopes of soaring into the wild blue yonder before plunging into the Waterloo Lake waters below.

Flugtag, which means “flying day” in German, pushes the envelope of human-powered flight, but competitors need more than airtime to reach the podium.

Teams are judged on three criteria: flight distance, creativity of the craft and showmanship, something Where Weasels Dare have in abundance “well, maybe apart from the whole flight distance thing” concedes team captain and plucky pilot Chris Lambert, “but still, 2 out of 3 isn’t too bad!”

So if you’re going to Flugtag or know someone who is, be sure Where Weasels Dare gets the loudest cheer of the day. You might even get your hands on one of their free, limited edition t-shirts.

You can follow the team’s progress up to, during and after the big day on Facebook and Twitter.
