How to get to Leeds by Train, Coach or Bus

So by now we’ve convinced you that you’ve just got to visit Leeds, so the next question is, how do you get there? Well rest assured there are plenty of ways, in fact all roads lead to Leeds. The cheapest option is by bus, then coach, train, or you could chose to fly to Leeds and Bradford airport.

Leeds by Train

All you train spotters, train anoraks, or even just train travellers will be pleased to hear that Leeds is a mere two hours away from London Kings Cross, just under two hours from Birmingham New Street, and a 53 minute hop across the Pennines from Manchester Piccadilly.

If you are coming from Scotland it’s just under three hours from Edinburgh, and four hours from Glasgow. If you’re coming from Hull, then its just under an hour to Leeds by train. Hull has ferry links to Zeebrugge and Rotterdam, so if you are coming to Leeds from mainland Europe, going via Hull is a good route.

All the trains come into Leeds Railway Station which is in the heart of the city centre.

Leeds by Coach or Bus

If the train seems a bit pricey then National Express is usually cheaper. Leeds is just under four hours away from London Victoria Coach Station, three hours from Birmingham, an hour from Manchester, just under two hours from Hull, nine hours from Edinburgh, and seven and a half hours from Glasgow.

The National Express coaches come into Leeds City Bus Station, just behind Kirkgate Market.

If money is tight then you could travel to Leeds from cities like Manchester, Newcastle and London using Megabus, which is incredibly cheap with fares starting from £1. The Megabus stop is situated on Kirkgate between the Railway Bridge and Pine Court, opposite Harper Street. It is close to the Kirkgate Market and the Bus Station.

Leeds by Air

Or if air is more your thing, then point your plane in the direction of Leeds Bradford International Airport. There are regular bus services from the airport into Leeds City Bus Station that take just over forty minutes. Manchester Airport is further away but there is a direct train service from Manchester Airport to Leeds which takes about ninety minutes.

Leeds by Car

Think you’re flash with your own motor, eh? Well, here goes. From London and the south you can get to Leeds in just under four hours from London. Just head north on the M1, and after passing Junction 42, branch right onto the M621, then take the A653 at Junction 3 which will bring you into the centre of Leeds.

From Edinburgh and the north to Leeds is about five hours away by car from Edinburgh. Head off down the A1, then leave the A1(M) at Junction 44, and at the roundabout take the fifth exit onto the A64, which will bring you into Leeds. From Manchester and the west get onto the M62, at Junction 27 get onto the M621, then at Junction 3 get onto the A653 for Leeds city centre. This will take a bit over an hour.

From Hull and the east you can be in Leeds in just over an hour from Hull by car. So head your motor onto the M62. Leave the M62 at Junction 29, at the roundabout take the third exit, and join the M1. From the M1 branch right onto the M621, then merge onto the A653, which will bring you into the centre of Leeds.

So, however you get to Leeds, you’ll be sure of a warm welcome and a good time.
