It may have been a rainy August so far, but for the August Bank Holiday weekend, 27th – 29th August, the grey clouds had better part and the sun come shining through for the three days of musical bliss that is the Leeds Festival. Yes, it’s nearly time to kick back, grab a beer, cider, smoothie, or whatever, and enjoy some of the best music around on the international scene, all at a park near you.
Leeds Festival lineup
This year’s headliners are of a distinctively North American flavour, with pop punk guys from San Diego, Blink-182, classic gritty hard rock act, Guns N’Roses, and indie rockers from Montreal, Arcade Fire. On the Friday watch out for the newly reformed Libertines, grime rapper Dizzee Rascal, and local indie band The Cribs.
It’s also good to see that The Maccabees will be back after drawing huge crowds last year. On Saturday, all the way from Tennessee there’s some strong and wistful alt rock with Paramore, and also Weezer, who have a new album out in September. If you fancy a bit of spicy Latino hip hop, then Cypress Hill are the ones to watch.
For those who like good pounding rock, on Sunday we have Queens of the Stoneage, Scottish rock band Biffy Clyro, and Welsh rockers Lostprophets. On the NME/Radio 1 Stage, Friday sees Aussie outfit Pendulum, post-hardcore Enter Shikari, and thoughtful experimental electronic duo Crystal Castles from Toronto.
Punk revival scene at Leeds festival
There will also be a real treat with Leeds’ very own Hadouken! Saturday it’s some London new rave with The Klaxons, (totally magick), and on Sunday get ready for acclaimed LCDSoundsystem, and lick your ice cream to the sounds of New Young Pony Club. Over on the Lock Up Stage on Friday get some Bad Religion – they’ve been very influential on the punk revival scene. And, talking of punk, on Sunday Alkaline Trio will be worth catching.
Head for the energetic Dance Stage on Saturday for Roots Manuva (all the way from sunny Stockwell), and the clean electronic sounds of Magnetic Man. Playing the Festival Republic Stage will be Ash, who gave a great headline performance on the John Peel Stage at Glastonbury this year.

Also worth seeing are Brighton-based indie band with the formidable moniker British Sea Power, and Leeds band Pulled Apart by Horses, who will certainly find the Leeds Festival to be a bit of a change from gigging at the Packhorse. If you fancy moving around a bit then over from the wilder outskirts of LA are punk dance outfit Funeral Party.
Some 70,000 people will be heading to the Leeds Festival at Bramham Park near Wetherby for all this, so let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
