Tour around cinemas in Leeds

Tour around cinemas in Leeds

Whether it’s the latest box office blockbuster, an oldie that has acquired cult status, or some unusual art-house offering, there’s nothing like loading yourself up with popcorn to enjoy a good night at the movies, and in Leeds you have the choice of fascinating old single-screen picture palaces or up-to-the-minute multiplexes. So sit back comfortably in your seat while I take you on a little tour of Leeds’ lovely cinemas.

Vue Cinema at The Light

Right in the heart of the city centre at The Light on the Headrow you have the 13-screen Vue Cinema, showing all the latest mainstream films. Not only that, but you are surrounded by all the fabulous shops, restaurants, cafés and facilities of this modern urban shopping centre.

Peak-time tickets are £6.65 for adults and £4.85 for children, with 3D movies a bit extra. Family tickets are available, as are concessions for students and seniors. There is ample secure parking at The Light costing £5.50 for an evening, or £7.50 for 3 to 4 hours during the day.

Hyde Park Picture House

But if you feel like a change from the ubiquitous multiplex, in the Hyde Park area of Leeds you’ll find the beautiful Edwardian Hyde Park Picture House, which was built as a hotel in 1908 and converted to a cinema in 1914. With fantastic original features, such as gas lighting and an ornate Edwardian balcony, it is now one of the few surviving picture palaces left in the UK and a Grade II listed building. It even has an organ!

At the Hyde Park Picture House you can see a mix of art-house and mainstream films, along with some screenings of cinema classics. Adult tickets are £5.50, concessions are £4.50, and on Monday nights it’s just £3.50!

Vue Cinema, Kirkstall Road

You will also find a 9-screen Vue Cinema on Kirkstall Road, showing all the latest films. This multiplex is located on Cardigan Fields Leisure Park, where there is also bowling, restaurants from Chinese to Indian, plus all the retail park staples such as Pizza Hut and Frankie and Benny’s.

One advantage here is that parking is free. Adult tickets are £6.55 and children’s tickets are £4.85, with family tickets and student and senior concessions available.

Cottage Road Cinema

Moving on to Far Headingley, just off the Otley Road and across from the New Inn you’ll find a magnificent gem hidden away: the Cottage Road Cinema is not just the oldest cinema in Leeds, but also one of the oldest cinemas in the UK, and has been showing films since 1912.

This quaint little cinema is located in what was once stabling for a Victorian mansion, and as well as showing current popular films it also has a special classic film night, Classics at the Cottage, every 6 weeks, with recently shown classics including Cabaret, Casablanca, Some Like It Hot, The Godfather & Top Hat. With adult tickets at £5.00 and concessions £4.00, this has to be a good deal, and even the snacks are not too expensive.

Showcase Cinema

Showcase Cinema is located on the Centre 27 Business Park, just on the outskirts of Leeds and easily accessible form the M62 motorway. It has free parking and there are a number of restaurants within walking distance of the cinema, including Chiuito, a Mexican restaurant, and Pizza Hut. Prices are £5.50 for adults and £5.10 for children. Check for regular special offers, though, on specific days of the week.

So, whether you love modern cinema or feel like taking a trip back in time, you’ll find the right cinema here in Leeds.
