Everyone needs to get away and unwind every now and again, so what better way to relax than booking a few nights in a hotel with spa. Relax in the sauna, steam room or jacuzzi and treat yourself to a beauty treatment. In this guide I’ve featured five of the more popular spa hotels in Leeds.

Mercure Leeds Parkway hotel

Mercure Leeds Parkway offers fantastic leisure facilities, which include a sauna, spa bath, steam room and tennis courts. Reflexology, massage and other relaxing beauty treatments are on offer in the Spa. The hotel is 5 miles north of Leeds city centre and on the doorstep to the scenic Golden Acre Park with its lake, gardens and walks along the Leeds country trail.

Rooms also feature satellite TV and facilities for making tea and coffee. The Claret Jug restaurant serves wholesome meals, and has stunning views of the golf course. Calverley Grill has 2 AA Rosettes, and offers fine Yorkshire dining.

Most of the rooms have magnificent views of the wonderful rolling parkland around Oulton Hall. The hotel has a beautiful azure indoor pool, so you can swim in all weather. There is also a gym where you can treat your body to a really good workout with the help of a personal trainer, and you can even indulge in Pilates and dance aerobics.

Outside of the Express Holiday Inn Leeds city centre near Royal Armouries

Express Holiday Inn Leeds city centre

The hotel offers a range of 112 modern and contemporary bedrooms (including large family rooms) that feature internet access, satellite television, pay movies and air conditioning; each room also has an en suite bathroom with power shower and tea and coffee-making facilities. A continental breakfast is included in the room rate, with a full traditional breakfast also available.

On the doorstep is the Royal Armouries Museum. The Royal Armouries is home to the UK’s national collection of arms and armour, including artillery, and is one of the most visited attractions in Leeds.

Explore Clarence Dock and the Leeds waterfront

A further benefit of the hotel’s location is that it provides a wonderful opportunity to explore Clarence Dock, Brewery Wharf and Granary Wharf, which, as well as being an ideal area to stroll around, often hosts events such as Leeds Waterfront Festival.

Restaurant in the Holiday Inn Express Leeds City

There is a restaurant within the hotel that is open all day, offering a range of different snacks and dishes, as well as a bar that serves food in the evenings. The Great Room is a contemporary-designed bar and lounge serving a range of bar meals and lighter snacks, where you can relax and have a drink and a bite to eat.

Free Wi-Fi in public areas in the hotel

The hotel also caters for business clients, offering three meeting rooms, each accommodating up to 30 people; buffets can be arranged for meetings, and complimentary Wi-Fi is available in all meeting rooms and public areas (although there is a charge for Wi-Fi use in individual rooms).

Good location main benefit of Holiday Inn Express

With its central location, Express by Holiday Inn is well-situated for all Leeds has to offer. Just a short walk from the city-centre, it is located next door to the relatively new (and grand) Alea casino, which has a number of restaurants and bars as well as being a place for those looking for a gamble.

Eating and drinking near to Express by Holiday Inn

On the waterfront, there are places to eat and drink to suit a variety of tastes and budgets, from Pizza Express through to the Indian restaurant chain Mumtaz on Clarence Dock.

Nearby Brewery Wharf houses the excellent Café Guru. For those looking for a drink, there is Oracle Bar, which offers a good food menu and, thanks to its extensive outdoor seating area, is a particularly popular destination when the weather is good.

Inside on of the bedrooms at the Met hotel in Leeds

The Met Hotel (formerly The Hotel Metropole) is located at the very heart of Leeds on King Street, just off Wellington Street and has all of the City attractions on its doorstep. This iconic 4-star hotel is renowned as one of the grandest hotels in Leeds and has 118 rooms in-keeping with the style of the hotel but with a modern touch throughout.

Click here to view Leeds hotel special offers and discounts.

Iconic The Met hotel built in 1898

The hotel, originally built back in 1898 (when it was Leeds’ Fourth White Cloth Hall), is a grade-II listed building and underwent a £6million renovation in 2005 and is easily recognisable thanks to its striking Victorian terracotta façade. The Met houses 120 en-suite bedrooms, with all the comfort and amenities that you may expect from a four star hotel.

The Met hotel rooms

There is a choice of three rooms: standard, contemporary and contemporary deluxe, the latter which comes with additional seating space. Rooms are bright and contemporary and have a sleek and modern feel that manages to remain in keeping with the overall style of the hotel.

The Met hotel caters well for business travellers

The accommodation in the Met Hotel Leeds has been specifically designed to cater towards the business executive with high speed internet connection and working area. The hotel also has a limited number of on-site car parking spaces.

With its stunning interior, eighteen meeting rooms and venue space in the Met Suite for upwards of 250 delegates it is no surprise that with a dedicated conference planning team the Met is fully established as being a key venue for many of Leeds leading business and corporate events.

Being located in the business district of Leeds, the Met also focuses on this area and can claim the recent accolade for Best Business Hotel in Yorkshire.

Eating and drinking at the Met hotel

The hotel possesses the excellent Tempus bar and restaurant, which offers diners a varied dinner menu with classic English dishes or contemporary cuisine sourcing local, seasonal produce wherever possible and caters well for vegetarians and those with special diets.

Hot and cold buffet lunches are also available whilst the comfortable Lloyds Bar offers a tempting selection of pub food and a selection of ales along with an extensive wine list.

Places nearby to the Met Hotel

The Royal Armouries, The West Yorkshire Playhouse, The Grand and Leeds City Gallery are all within close proximity of the hotel, whilst the best Leeds has to offer in terms of shopping, nightlife and dining are but a short distance away.

A mere ten minutes or so walk away will see you not only at the acclaimed Victoria Quarter, home to some of Leeds’ more exclusive outlets, but also Harvey Nichols. The lively Call Lane is too nearby, but just across Wellington Street is the very much underrated Toast Bar, nicely located away from the hustle and bustle.

Restaurants near the Met Hotel

You will also be well served eating out with Anthony’s located nearby on Boar Lane and its counterpart Piazza by Anthony in the historic Corn Exchange building, whilst fans of Italian food are catered for by the excellent Piccolinos on Park Row.

The Met is also able to provide a great location for wedding celebrations and the magnificent Ballroom is well suited to banquets and dinner dances.

Located near to the Granary Wharf development and overlooking the waterfront, a short ten minute walk takes you right into the heart of the City Centre, making the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Leeds City Centre one of the premier hotels for a stay in Leeds. The hotel, which has received architectural recognition from the RIBA, comprises 333 spacious rooms that have a modern feel.

Hi-tech hotel room

The room designs are with a consideration to ‘productivity, technology and spatial orientation’, with floods of natural daylight from floor-to-ceiling windows, enhanced fresh air-conditioning (delivering 30% more oxygen), sound proofed walls, a Butler service button and an Apple iMac in each room that comes with high-speed Wi-Fi access and Skype.
The Queens hotel first opened in 1937 and it is one of the best located hotels, directly next door to Leeds train station and within walking distance of every attraction within the city centre. One of the advantages of staying at the Queens is that unlike many of the hotels within the city centre, it is a very large hotel offering 217 rooms making it easier to secure a booking without advance notice.

This also helps make it the perfect hotel for a last minute get away. There are six different types of rooms available at the hotel: double room, flexi room, single room, Qsaver double, deluxe double room, and flex twin rooms.

One of the suites in the New Ellington Hotel

Tucked away off Wellington Street in the heart of the city’s financial area is The New Ellington, a stylish hotel that is very much in keeping with the current trend for boutique hotels. The name is, of course, a tribute to Duke Ellington who played at the city’s 1958 music festival and the art deco interiors are clearly a nod towards New Orleans.

Click here to view Leeds hotel special offers and discounts.

Stylish boutique hotel

The hotel, reborn with the ‘New’ prefix in September 2010 following eighteen months of closure may appear unassuming from the outside, nestled alongside a row of Georgian houses situated on York Street just off Wellington Street but is a hotel that has a great feel to it and is ideally located for a stay in Leeds. The red brick exterior may present a discreet façade but upon entering the hotel you are presented with a variety of different styles and colours.

The New Ellington hotel rooms

The New Ellington is a funky boutique hotel with 35 chic bedrooms; sizeable beds with Egyptian cotton sheets, suede chairs and fringed lampshades adorn the rooms with the vibrant colour schemes giving the room’s real identity. Each of the rooms come with Nespresso machines, flat screen TV’s and free WiFi as standard in addition to a choice of pre-downloaded iPods, whilst for gamers there is the facility to borrow games consoles like the Wii or Xbox 360.

Click here to check availability at the New Ellington

Bars and restaurants near the hotel

The location of the hotel is ideal, just a short walk from the train station, with a good choice of restaurants, shops, and attractions all nearby. In terms of shopping, the popular Victoria Quarter and Harvey Nichols are only a 5 minutes walk away, alongside many other designer shops. Cross over Wellington Street from the hotel and you can find yourself in Toast bar, ideal as either a stop post-shopping or to start the evening. Leeds also has a fantastic number of quality restaurants; including Anthony’s which is located nearby on Boar Lane.

Popular attractions nearby

The New Ellington’s’ location means a fairly short walk will also take you to Leeds City Museum, Art Gallery, the Henry Moor Institute, Leeds Grand Theatre and West Yorkshire Playhouse, all of which house a number of excellent exhibitions and productions year round.

Close by too is also Park Square, offering a patch of green in the city and always a popular spot for lunch on better days, and with many financial companies having offices in the vicinity of the hotel there are conference rooms and facilities available for hire.

The Gin bar in the New Ellington Hotel

The New Ellington lounge bar

Although perfectly located to explore Leeds, there is plenty on offer within the hotel itself. The lounge bar, featuring crushed burgundy armchairs, brown leather thrones and art deco paintings of jazz legends offers a calming environment in which to relax. As well as offering a number of wines, beers and cocktails, the bar offers sixteen different types of gin (believed to be unparalleled in Yorkshire).

The New Ellington hotel restaurant

The restaurant is well renowned for its quality food with a sizeable menu with a modern-British feel. The kitchen strives to produce as much food sourced locally as it can. Suede booths and tables are complimented by beaded curtains and light fittings to provide an intimate setting in which to dine.

As well as a perfect environment for an evening, The New Ellington also welcomes both guests and visitors for morning coffee or afternoon tea in the light-filled open plan reception area.

One of the rooms at the Radisson BLU hotel in Leeds

If I was to choose a hotel based on solely its location in the city centre then I would choose the Radisson Blu Hotel. As you walk out of the train station head towards the city square and then walk up Park Row – at the top of this street you will find the hotel.

Click here to view Leeds hotel special offers and discounts.

Great central location

The Radisson Blu hotel is situated in the Light, a multi-purpose entertainment centre with shops, restaurants and a cinema. It is located only a short walk away from Millennium Square, with its bars, restaurants and Leeds City Museum, which is free, and is highly recommended for visitors to the city.

Radisson Blue Hotel information

Radisson Blu Hotel has 147 uniquely designed rooms that enhance the original building’s character and architecture. Rooms with accessible facilities for disabled guests are available. Relax after a full day of sightseeing in Leeds with free high-speed, wireless Internet, television and mini bar in all rooms.

Click here to check availability at Radisson Blu Hotel

The Business class rooms include complimentary use of the Esporta Health Club (you pay a nominal fee in the standard rooms) in The Light Complex including sauna, gym and swimming pool. The business rooms feature additional amenities like: free pay movies, bathrobe and slippers and breakfast buffet.

The Lounge Restaurant and Bar offers guests a choice between the casual atmosphere of the upper section – complete with cosy fireplace – or a formal dinner in the lower section. The menu focuses on fresh food and local ingredients.

Restaurants and tourist attractions nearby

Opposite the hotel you will find Leeds Art Gallery, Tiled Hall Café and Henry Moore Institute. Location wise the hotel is very central and is a good base for a weekend break in the city. Restaurants wise; you are very close to the Red Hot World Buffet Bar, which has dishes from over 30 countries and Da Mario Pizzeria, one of my personal favourite Italian restaurants in the city centre.

Shopping in Leeds

Both the Core, St John’s and Merrion shopping centres are within a few minutes walk away. Further down the road is Briggate, which is a pedestrianised street and a popular place with shoppers with its historic shopping arcades including Victoria Quarter and Harvey Nichols, if you want to treat yourself and spend some serious money.

Live music venues nearby

If you are visiting Leeds to go to a concert at the 02 Academy, the hotel is less than five minutes walk away. Leeds Met also is a concert venue and is nearby. Just a stroll over the road from the Light you will find a pub and live music venue called the Northern Monkey.

Pubs and bars near the Radisson Blu hotel

The nearest bars to the Radisson Blu hotel are the Nation of Shopkeepers, a popular bar with live music, comic fairs, and lots going on through-out the week. If you enjoy trying out guest beers then Mr Foley’s is a pub worth checking out, opposite the art gallery.
